How ATS filtering changed in 2026
Semantic matching is replacing exact keyword search in major platforms. Here is what that changes for applicants, and what it does not.

The larger applicant tracking platforms have been shifting from exact keyword search toward semantic matching — comparing meaning rather than strings. It is a real change, and it has been widely over-interpreted.
What semantic matching changes
Under exact matching, "Postgres" and "PostgreSQL" were different tokens, and a filter for one would miss the other. Semantic matching treats them as the same concept. The same goes for "led a team of six" and "managed six engineers".
For applicants, that removes a category of unfair misses. You no longer need to guess which exact spelling a recruiter typed into the search box.
What it does not change
Three things are worth being clear about, because the marketing around this tends to blur them.
Parsing still happens first. Semantic matching operates on the extracted text. If your two-column layout scrambles during extraction, better matching downstream does not help — the input is already wrong.
Recruiters still filter on hard criteria. Location, work authorisation, years of experience, and required certifications are structured fields. They are checked exactly, not semantically.
Fabrication is not more survivable. Semantic matching makes it easier to recognise that "handled outages" means incident response. It does not make it easier to claim experience you do not have.
What to do differently
Slightly less than you might think. Stop hunting for exact keyword variants — that effort is now largely wasted. Spend it instead on describing scope and outcomes clearly, since those are the parts a semantic system can actually use to distinguish you from someone with the same job title.
